Other Non-League Football Clubs in South Manchester

TRAFFORD AND FLIXTON

This page provides summary information on the Unibond First Division side, Trafford FC, and the NW Counties First Division team, Flixton. Both sides play in the south-west Manchester area in the Borough of Trafford.

Trafford's full-back, Rigby, (now with Vauxhall Motors), converts a penalty in the remarkable 3-3 home draw with Stocksbridge Park Steels in 1999/2000 season.

TRAFFORD F.C.

Trafford FC have their ground at Shawe View, near Chassen Road railway station. There is ample car parking on the immediately adjacent Penny Bridge Lane car park. Admission is normally £4 for adults. Trafford are the holders of the Unibond President's Cup (2000).

In August, The Non-League on the Net web-site tipped Trafford for relegation, predicting that the team would finish in 21st place this coming season. In a survey of all the clubs in the Unibond First Division, Trafford were listed as relegation fodder even without the author knowing about the massive loss of first-team players chronicled below. Presumably the reviewer would have placed Trafford 22nd had he known of the exodus. Instead he forecasts that Kendal Town will prop up the League come May, 2001.

By the beginning of August, 2000, nine members of the Trafford team from 1999-2000 had left the club, following an enforced cut in wages. Those still at the Club at that point were Darren Emmett, Darren Quick, Peter Mellor, Tony Hogan, Chris Patterson and Lee Southwood. Those who left included 1999-2000 Player of the Year, Gary Vaughan, who with Tony Briffa, joined Salford City; Billy McCartney and David Lowe moved up to the Unibond Premier with Stalybridge Celtic; Mick Garside and Steve Burns went to Mossley; Neil Rigby joined Vauxhall Motors, Peter Weston signed for Congleton and 'keeper Jim O'Donnell was rumoured to be joining Hyde United or Witton Albion. McCartney, however, returned to Trafford early in the season. Dave Norman, deputy to Mark Molyneaux left in mid-season, with several players, for Cheadle Town.

In these circumstances, Mark Molyneaux has done a remarkable job to steer Trafford to a current position of sixth (March 2001), albeit the side has played more games than most in the League. A number of fine young players have emerged including Shaun Whitehead and Leon Diazcuk, whilst captain Darren Emmett has been leading from the front.

TRAFFORD NOW FIFTH

Goals from Murray, Thomas and Hogan put Trafford into 5th place in the table tonight. A spirited Winsford were unlucky not to close the margin in the second half, having gone in 1-2 down at the interval when Thomas replied immediately to Winsford's 37th minute equaliser. Even after Hogan's 67th minute goal, the visitors had several chances but Trafford held on for a narrowly deserved win.

WITTON SEEN OFF

Trafford beat Witton Albion 2-1 yesterday at Shawe View. In a close game, Witton were probably unlucky not to take a point, having taken an early lead through Heywood, off whom a Hogan clearance rebounded into the net following an Anane shot which had hit the post (7 mins). Trafford came into the match midway through the first half and deservedly levelled after 37 minutes when Thomas headed in an Emmett cross following a short corner. Emmett himself got the winner (74 mins) neatly finishing off a fine move involving Patterson, Whitehead and Wilkinson.

RESERVES FACE EXPULSION

Trafford Reserves face expulsion from the Manchester County Cup after reaching the final. This is due to allegedly playing an unregistered player in the quarter-final.

    MARK MOLYNEAUX INTERVIEW

In the Pink newspaper of 15 October Mark Molyneaux expresses himself pleased with his young team. Following the mass exodus over the summer, caused by financial cut-backs, Trafford have had to rely largely on youngsters, with Darren Emmett, Chris Patterson and Billy McCartney being the experienced backbone of the side. He feels that standards in the Unibond First Division have dropped and that the answer is greater regionalisation and, therefore, lower travel expenses.

    FA CUP QUALIFYER

TRAFFORD (0) 1 FLIXTON 0 : Trafford gained a narrow victory over neighbours Flixton in tonight's FA Cup Preliminary Round match. Flixton were unlucky not to get a draw but Trafford stepped up their game for the first part of the second half and scored the only goal after 52 minutes. Chris Patterson volleyed the ball into the net from 15 yards after Oram, the Flixton keeper, had punched clear under pressure from a Trafford corner. In the first half a superb 25-yard freekick (?by Thomas) nearly brought Flixton the lead but goalkeeper Merrick managed to tip it onto the crossbar (28 mins). Flixton strove hard for the equaliser and had the better of the last half hour. However, the closest they came was when Merrick fumbled a high ball but his defenders managed to get the ball away. The match was entertaining and played at a fast pace throughout; despite the first-half rain a good crowd attended (?250).

    FA TROPHY DRAW

Trafford will play Farsley Celtic, at home, on 4/11/2000 in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy. If they win, they are at home against the winners of the Spennymoor United and Frickley Athletic tie.

    FLIXTON

  • Flixton play at Valley Road, Flixton. (Tel: 0161-747-7757). They were relegated from the Unibond First Division to the North West Trains First Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season. Ironically their relegation was confirmed by losing 3-5 at home to neighbours Trafford (24/4/00). The Flixton ground is famous for its excellent, modern club house, complete with large screen Sky TV installation. The refreshment hut also serves an excellent hot-pot. The ground has its own car park. Admission prices for adults in 1999/2000 were £3.50 for adults. A disastrous season has seen Flixton facing a second successive relegation in 2001.
